How many spare camera batteries should you carry?

For professionals and amateurs alike, running out of camera battery mid-shoot means the end of the shoot.

This is why it’s important to carry spare, backup, reserve batteries with you - just in case.

Of course the amount of batteries you need depends on the length of the shoot (and the availability of a power source to recharge your already-depleted batteries) and how power-intensive your camera is.

Depending on the size of your camera or battery capacity, it’s common for modern cameras to be able to take up to 1000 shots between charges - although this differs greatly for older cameras and batteries, as well as if you’re taking videos instead of photographs.

A good rule of thumb for amateurs: always carry at least one spare battery and a battery charger with you.

A professional could need 2-4 spare batteries, spare flash batteries and a charger, depending on the location and duration of the photoshoot.

Knowing the correct number will come from experience - but it’s always best to be ‘too’ prepared.

What should I look for in a replacement camera battery?

There are many camera battery brands and types on the market. But, how do you find the correct replacement battery for your digital camera, camcorder, video camera and more?

  1. Compatibility. You want to find a battery that 100% fits your camera. Preferably one that was designed specifically as a replacement battery for your camera type. To find out if a battery is a match for your device, look at the model/serial number on your battery and find a replacement that’s compatible for it.

    All of the camera batteries for sale on our website come with a compatibilities list to ensure you always find the correct one.

  2. Correct voltage. Ensure whatever replacement or reserve camera battery you purchase has the same voltage as your original battery. Small differences are acceptable - deviations of 0.1V-0.2V, for example - but anything above or below that could potentially damage your camera.

  3. Correct cell type. Camera batteries often use either lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) or nickel metal hydride batteries (NiMH). If your original battery used Li-ion cell technology, it’s advisable that you choose a replacement which uses the same cell type and vice-versa.

  4. Capacity. The capacity of a camera battery, indicated in mAh (milliampere hours) or Ah (ampere hours), represents how much charge that battery can store and provide. Essentially, its battery life. The higher the mAh/Ah, the higher the capacity and theoretically the longer you can use the camera between charges.

    It makes no sense to buy a replacement battery with a lower mAh than your original battery’s - because it means you’d get less use out of it between charges and you’d probably end up having to buy even more spare camera batteries. You can, however, choose a modern battery pack that has a higher mAh/Ah than even your original, branded battery.

How long should a good camera battery last?

Camera and video camera batteries come in a range of different cell types and technologies, something that can have a large impact on the overall lifespan of a battery.

Here is a short breakdown of some of the battery technologies and how many charging cycles can be expected from them:

Lithium batteries and power packs: modern lithium battery packs from subtel® and CELLONIC® achieve approximately 700-1000 charging cycles before they fall below 80% residual charge - with one charge cycle equating to a complete charge from 0% to 100%.

NiMH battery packs: modern NiMH battery packs from subtel® and CELLONIC® achieve up to 500 charging cycles before they fall below 80% residual charge.

Whilst these are the results we’ve seen in testing, it is also important to adopt a sensible charging and battery care routine to prolong the lifespan of your batteries as best you can.

How to look after a camera battery?

By taking proper care of your camera batteries, you can increase their lifespan and prolong their performance. A lot of this comes down to how and when you recharge them.

Care tips for camera battery packs often depend on the battery cell technology that’s being used - but, in general, using chargers that overcharge or use excessive charging speeds will quickly degrade the performance of your camera’s batteries.

Slow and steady wins the race - and intelligent, smart chargers and ‘gentle’ chargers are the key to not putting too much strain on your camera battery.

Tips for extending the lifespan of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer camera batteries

If you want to extend the battery life of lithium-ion batteries - charge your batteries gently, avoiding too low and high charge levels.

What this means is, aim to never let your device’s battery level drop down beyond a minimum of 20% charge and beyond a maximum of 80% charge. This means it’s not recommended to leave your batteries charging overnight, because they will exceed 80%.

Following this simple rule will increase the lifespan of your lithium batteries by maintaining their correct capacity over the long-term.

Tips for extending the lifespan of NiMH camera battery packs

For NiMH batteries, this logic is reversed. Instead, it’s best to fully charge and fully discharge these battery types - from 100% to 0% - as partial charges will lower the battery life.

This is because of something called ‘Memory Effect’ - where each time you charge, the capacity of the battery slightly decreases. It doesn’t matter if you charge for two minutes or two hours, the battery will still incur an incremental loss of battery capacity.

The modern battery cells used in CELLONIC® NiMH batteries offer a much lower level of Memory Effect, helping them to last longer and with an increased number of charging cycles.

How to correctly store your spare and reserve camera batteries

The temperature at which you store your camera batteries can have a large impact on their longevity, performance and ability to hold charge.

The golden rule is: avoid storing them in hot temperatures and avoid storing them in cold temperatures.

The optimal temperature to store rechargeable batteries is at a cool 15-20°C. This means you should avoid the following:

  • Do not leave your rechargeable batteries in a hot car, room or studio during summer
  • Do not leave them by a window or in direct sunshine
  • Do not wrap them in cloth or any other material which will increase their overall temperature
  • Do not leave them in a cold shed or garage over the winter

Whilst we can’t always 100% ensure our batteries are stored at the perfect temperature, the modern cells manufactured by subtel® and CELLONIC® have been specifically designed to be extra temperature resistant - for reliable, longer life and higher capacity whatever the weather.

Self-discharge and deep discharge - what are they?

The level of charge held in rechargeable batteries will decrease over time - even when in storage and not being used. This is called self-discharge.

Depending on the battery cell type, the level a rechargeable battery will self-discharge ranges from about 4%-30% a month.

If stored unused for an extended period of time, and the charge / voltage stored within the cells falls too far, this is called deep discharge.

Deep discharge can greatly diminish a battery’s ability to recharge - and may even render the battery useless.

While self-discharge is normal and unavoidable, deep discharge is avoidable.

Firstly, storing your batteries at lower temperatures reduces the rate of self-discharge and helps preserve the energy stored in the battery.

But to ensure the longevity of your backup batteries, it’s essential that you use them every few months to keep them functioning. This could mean charging/discharging them through regular use or scheduling top-up charges at intervals throughout the year.
