How often should I charge my laptop?
If you want to protect the long-term battery life of your laptop, the answer to this question isn’t as simple as: ‘Charge it when your battery’s low’.
Most laptops use Lithium Ion batteries. To prolong the lifespan of Lithium Ion batteries, it’s important to not let your laptop fully charge and discharge - e.g. going from 100% battery to 0% battery.
Lithium Ion batteries perform at their best when they’re kept between 30-40% and 80% charge. A rule of thumb would be to never let your laptop battery charge run below 20% - this rules out leaving your laptop plugged in all day and all night overnight because it will overcharge.
If your laptop has a removable battery and you plan to use it for many hours (e.g. whilst sitting at a desk), simply remove the laptop battery and run the laptop using the AC adapter only. This will prevent overcharging.
Adopting a smart charging routine will increase the lifespan of your laptop’s batteries - and means that when you do need your laptop on the go, it’ll maintain a healthy runtime between charges for longer.
Can I use any charger with my laptop?
The answer to this is: no, not every charger. But certainly some. It depends if the charger is compatible with your laptop.
If you have a modern laptop that takes a standard USB-C charger, there’s a very good chance that other USB-C laptop chargers will charge your laptop.
With the traditional, black, barrel plug laptop power supplies, it can be a bit more complicated.
Different laptops take differently-shaped input connector plugs, so finding a cable that has the same shaped plug as yours is the first challenge.
Also, different laptops take different amounts of voltage. Any laptop charger you attempt to use with your laptop will have to provide the same voltage as your original charger - or else you could seriously damage your laptop if you attempted charging with it.
Another factor is the use of microchips within chargers from different brands. If you had a Lenovo laptop and plugged in a Dell charger, for example, there’s a chance that the microchip within the Dell charger would not recognise the Lenovo and simply not charge.
So you end up with a situation where a Lenovo charger with the same shape connector plug and voltage will probably work with other Lenovo laptops, but it may not work with other brands.
The question is: with the risk to your laptop that experimenting with non-compatible charging cables poses, what’s the point?
subtel® manufactures and sells a wide range of replacement laptop charger cables for a wide range of laptops, gaming laptops and notebooks, including all major brands and model types.
Our chargers are specifically designed for 100% compatibility, featuring all necessary microchips and safeguards against incorrect voltages, overcharging, overheating and short-circuiting - a replacement laptop charger as good or better than your original, for cheaper.
